LUNTIAN
A 2D Animated Short Film on the Impact of
Plastic Pollution in the Philippines.
DID YOU KNOW
Philippines consumes an estimate of 163 million pieces of plastic sachets every day.
This reality has transformed the country into a "sachet economy," where the plastic industry plays a crucial role in the national economy by supplying low-cost consumer essentials to poor and middle-income families.

This extensive use of plastic has significantly impacted various environmental areas, including:
Ocean
Microplastic contamination has been confirmed across various fishing grounds in the Philippines, particularly in Manila Bay and Panguil Bay. These microplastics, originating from improper plastic waste disposal, bioaccumulate in marine organisms, posing significant risks to the entire food web. The ingestion of microplastics by fish and mussels potentially introduces these harmful particles into the human food supply.
Air
Airborne microplastics have been detected throughout Metro Manila and likely across the entire country. These suspended particles can be inhaled, potentially entering the human body and posing health risks. This constant exposure underscores the need to address plastic pollution comprehensively.
Land
Microplastics have also been found in soil, where they resist decomposition and accumulate over time. This persistent presence negatively impacts soil health and overall ecosystem quality. Preventing plastic leakage into the environment is crucial for preserving the health of terrestrial ecosystems.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Animation for Environmental Awareness and Action
Luntian is an animated film came from deep concern for the environmental impact of poor solid waste management and the escalating issue of plastic pollution in the Philippines. This project, in collaboration with Envirotech Waste Recycling, Inc. (EWRI), aims to change the narrative around plastic waste. By showcasing the transformation of everyday waste into useful products, the film seeks to inspire viewers to rethink their waste disposal habits and recognize the potential of recycling. Luntian intertwines the story of environmental degradation with a call to action, urging individuals to be more mindful of their waste, thereby promoting Sustainable Development Goal 12. Through the power of animation, Luntian not only raises awareness but also emotionally resonates with the audience, demonstrating that even waste can be impactful and valuable.
ABOUT THE FILM
Luntian’s story follows 13-year-old Hiraya as she embarks on a mysterious journey after a seemingly innocent act leads her to encounter an unusual creature. Along the way, she witnesses unsettling visions of environmental destruction and plastic pollution, forcing her to confront the impact of human actions on nature.
Guided by a strange ally, Hiraya discovers the power of personal responsibility and the potential for change. Luntian is an imaginative and poignant exploration of environmental awareness, highlighting the importance of taking small steps to protect the planet before it's too late.
